Sentinel-1 GRD 2014-2017 products now available

We are pleased to announce that Sentinel Hub now provides Sentinel-1 GRD data since the beginning of the mission data availability in October 2014.

The Sentinel-1 mission comprises a constellation of two polar-orbiting satellites, operating day and night performing C-band synthetic aperture radar imaging, enabling them to acquire imagery regardless of the weather. This means that more than 350 000 newly added products, will provide you with insights into the earth’s surface between 2014 and 2017. Learn more about the products from the mission website and our documentation.

We would like to thank Alaska Satellite Facility to provide us access to these data and support in the process.

Why is there way less coverage between 2014-2017 compared to 2017-present? Having trouble finding documentation on this. From looking at the Sunergise bucket we’ve found:

aws s3 ls --summarize --human-readable --recursive s3://sentinel-s1-l1c/GRD/2014 --request-payer shows 14Tb of data from the year 2014, which is a lot less than the 1,800TB from 2018.

Is this a limitation of the constellation of ar there Sentinel-1 scenes prior to 2017 that aren’t included on the bucket?

Well, in 2014 Sentinel-1A was launched… it takes some time to get the satellite to full processing. And then in April 2016 Sentinel-1B was launched as well, starting to produce twice as much data, but again taking some time to get to full processing.
I believe all data are available.
